During the first week of lent we are given a reading from Jonah. Jonah is not only a wonderful prophet that remind us the need to repent, but he also mirrors to us the issues we have in following Christ. We are all called to follow Jesus, but sometimes we misunderstand his call or run from it. Going off the mark in this way may not be sinful, but it does keep us from living to the fullness of humanity entrusted to us by God. Lent is a season that calls us to a lot of practices that ask us to focus on our interior state. The temptation, however, as we work on our inner self, that does not mean we exclude the people around us. Lent is not a season of self-help. The parable of the sheep and goats in Matthew 25, wakes us up to the call we all must care for others in their need.
