Recently, the Carmelite order on July 27th celebrated the memorial of Bl. Titus Brandsma. He was a Dutchman who worked to keep the Nazis and their ideology out of the catholic schools and newspapers in Holland. Today, I read a sermon he gave during the war years calling people to heroism in faith and love against the new-paganism of the Nazis. I had a funeral in the Parish last week. At my parish we pay to have cantors come and sing at the mass to offer some beauty to the family during their hard times. The Gospel reading from the 14th Sunday of Ordinary got me thinking. Thinking about what? Our relationship with God. The gospel was the beginning of Mark 6, the passage where the Family of Jesus start to reject him.
