Right now, I am recovering from surgery in upstate New York. Recently, during my recovery our students from our two Carmelite schools in the Bronx sent me ‘Get well’ letters. To say that I started to cry while reading these letters would be an understatement. While reading these letters I noticed that my little acts of just being present to the kids, meant the world to them, which I was surprised by. Today, I offer a reflection about what we can learn from these little moments that meant so much to these kids. April 25th is the feast day of St. Mark the Evangelist. Biblical scholars believe his was the first gospel written. The Gospel of St. Mark also has a connection to the Roman community of St. Peter. April 23rd is the birthday of my brother. He is an amazing man, husband, and father. Also, he is an amazing brother to me. Yet, he and I were not always good brothers or friends to each other. In our younger years he and I fought all the time, even to the point of becoming physical. Today, I share a story about how he and I became great brothers and wonderful friends. Since, its release my mind and heart has been reading and praying over the preparatory document that the youth put out for the bishops of the world. It is a rich document that deserves our respect and time. Within the document the youth offer us a keen insight on paths towards vocation and mission. They remind us about the need to see vocation not as a merely moment choice, but something that encompasses the full life of a person. Pope Francis released an apostolic exhortation this week on holiness. Within this document he has several thoughts about silence in the life of holiness. If his comments are taken out of context, Our Holy Father is treating the gift and tool of silence in a harsh way. Today, I share an experience with a man on the subway in NYC. He was African American and I am white. Through an incident he made the choice to say some racists things about me being white.
